The Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, marked a historic milestone in Ghana’s sustainable transportation on November 27, 2024. He commissioned the first electric busesfor Metro Mass Transit Limited during a ceremony in Adenta, Accra, attended by dignitaries including ministers, MPs, and transport stakeholders.
The deployment of electric buses represents a significant advancement for Ghana’s public transportation system. Offering a cleaner and more cost-effective solution than diesel, these new vehicles will reduce emissions and lower operating expenses, improving affordability and accessibility. Dr. Bawumia stressed the initiative’s importance in building a sustainable nation.
These electric buses incorporate advanced features for improved service. The “Tap n’ Go” electronic ticketing system minimizes revenue leakage, while GPS tracking ensures passenger safety. A dedicated maintenance unit will provide technical support and driver training, guaranteeing efficient operation.
The electric buses mark a significant step towards Ghana’s sustainability goals. Their commissioning reflects the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, as outlined in President Akufo-Addo’s 2023 National Electric Vehicle Policy, ushering in a new era of transport innovation.
Electric buses will improve public transportation in Ghana, offering affordable and efficient services. Reduced operating costs allow Metro Mass Transit to enhance services, potentially lower fares, expand its fleet, and create new jobs in vehicle maintenance and operation.
Successful implementation of the electric bus program requires robust ongoing maintenance. The government is addressing this by partnering with educational institutions to provide specialized training for technicians and operators.
